Hi,
I have an Eircom Flatrate dialup account [too much
copper wire to get broadband:(] which has been fine
for some months now. It's running on a Slackware 9.0
system using pppd and chat to make the connection (and
share it to other machines on the network).
Had some initial problems when setting it up about six
months ago. It turned out that eircom doesn't send a
login prompt it says (after the connect line) "Welcome
to eircom!" and then just sits and waits for you to
guess you have to put in username and password. Having
changed the relevent bits of /usr/sbin/ppp-on-dialer
to expect, instead of 'ogin:' and 'assword:' 'Welcome
to eircom!' and '' respectively worked.
This worked for several months then last night it
died. When I connect using minicom it now says
CONNECT 115200
but after that it just flings garbage at me (mainly
'}' and '!') then hangs up. The logs simply say

If I change the phone number from 1893150150 to
1892150150 (which means I'm calling the pay as you go
rather than the flat rate number) then it works
(without changing any other settings. If I put the
modem on the dreaded XP box then i can call the
flatrate number but then the rest of the network can't
see it.
Any ideas please?
Adam
