would rescan-scsi-bus be an option to get the cd's detected (I don't
usually mess with setup)

I had a similar problem with suse 9.0 (i know mdk10 has 2.6 kernel). Its
problem was that the new sbp2 modules require external scsi bus rescan.
Suse
9.1 does the bus rescan (on the install cd) and works like a charm :).

imo this is the same rescan-scsi-bus thing.
