I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Harney today in Drogheda as she was
campaining for her PD councillors.
I asked her why, after a full year of Europeans stating their cases regarding
software patents, the Irish government had decided to strip out all the
ammendments that had been carefully drafted to limit the damages such patents
could cause?
Her answer was "You must be one of those LINUX fanatics." Which she pronounced
LIE-NOX.
I tried to explain that it had more to do with small and medium sized software
companies being able to compete against the Multi-national that had put her
up to stripping the restrictions from the proposal, and she only said "We're
are looking into it." and turned away.
Obviously too many of the letters and E-Maila are comming across as fanatical
rather than level-headed explainations of the dangers software patents pose
to Irelands, and Europes software industry.
Cheers,
John Gay
