Not entirely sure what the netiquette on posting a fix to my own problem 
is.. on a thread that never got replied to is.. but, errm..

This is a Slackware thing.

All users of Slackware 10, not running current should change

/etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules

KERNEL="tty[p-za-e][0-9a-f]*", "NAME=tty/s%n", SYMLINK="%k"
to
KERNEL="tty[p-za-e][0-9a-f]*", "NAME=pty/s%n", SYMLINK="%k"

Turns out /dev/tty has recently been changed to a directory, for some... 
very good reason............
