I transfer the ISO files to /FC-3, say.
Then I say
===========================
mount -o loop *disk1.iso /mnt/cdrom
mkdir /boot/FC-3
cp -a /mnt/cdrom/isolinux/* /boot/FC-3
===========================
and add a "stanza" to grub.conf
===========================
title Fedora Core Boot
root (hd0,1)
kernel /FC-3/vmlinuz
initrd /FC-3/initrd.img
===========================
(I have a separate /boot partition.)
Then I can boot into the distribution.
