There is a very interesting thread on the fedora list at present:

In summary a graph was done of what actually happens
during the boot process. From this some obvious
stupid stuff was noticed and within a couple of days
the boot on one FC3 machine has gone from 1m29s to 46s

It's amazing it has taken till now to do this.
I really wonder about redhat sometimes.
