I hadn't seen this command before.  Once i installed the mmv
debian-package (24kb download), i ran the command shown above on the
same 5000 files i used before and  this turns out to be the quickest
solution yet, taking about 13 seconds compared to 16 or so for Brian's
solution using xargs and rename.
