[ILUG] USB stick mount - which device letter/number?

[ILUG] USB stick mount - which device letter/number?

Hi.
I'm sure there is a simple explanation?

When I mount my usb stick I just enter (as root)
mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /mnt/flash

but how do I know which letter/number?

In other words how do I know in advance which of /dev/sda1 ... /dev/sdd4
to use?

There has to be a better way than trial & error..?

/sbin/lsusb gives me:
kinsella at jkcray:/usr/share/doc >/sbin/lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 005: ID 08ec:0012 M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

and I currently have stick mounted on:
/dev/sdc1 248568 6000 242568 3% /mnt/flash

I dont see any obvious connection between
Bus 004 Device 005: ID 08ec:0012
and
/dev/sdc1

Should I be using some kind of automount to avoid this problem?

I tried googling - maybe I misunderstood what I got..

Thanks for any advice.

John
