Excellent point - excellent approach - the benefit of the GUI tools
for beginners is that they still let you look at the text file, and
usually allow you to modify it anyway... but you get to immerse yourself
into the commandline as you need to - rather than having to hit everything
day one.

I hope that you will take your 'only use tools available on all machines'
ethic to heart and stay away from that horrible thing called emacs. Only
use cat / sed and awk to edit files :-) You could also consider that visual
editor - I think it's called 6 or something... if you really had to
