How much memory is on the card?

Look at the X startup logs, you might see "DRI disabled" if you're 
running at a res/colour-depth that doesnt leave enough for room for 
DRI.

DRI worked for me on my G200 up until I bought my Radeon 9200 - but 
I'd have to start a second server 1024x768 @ depth 16 to have enough 
video ram over to have DRI working on my 8MB card.
