I have just sorted it actually. Prionnsias suggested the obvious (off
list for some reason), i.e.: grep EE in the Xfree logs.
Once I did so, I copped on straight away!
I editied XF86config-4, removed the Load "glx" line, restarted X still
in 1280*1024*16bit and its working.
(it was trying to load the NVIDIA glx!!!!!!!!)
I have just ran enemy territory (640*480*16 bit*lowest detail) and it
seems fine. Its _barely_ playable, but will be good enough for my tests.

It will be dog slow as glxgears only reports 360FPS, which is _brutal_
compared to the gforce3's 3600FPS. But its purely to stress test the agp
bus.
Thanks guys - I obviously do not understand the difference between DRI
and GLX - I'll google.
