Nope it's a bit wierder than that :-), the FireGL team which ATI bought
from SONICblue, wrote the original FireGL drivers and seem to have based
them on DRI... so ATI just continued on what they were given, also ATI had
a fairly complete DRI driver for the R200 in the DDK, they just didn't
have it open source hence the Weather Channel got involved, a lot of the
r200 driver is based on stuff done in the r200 reference driver which you
get from ATI in the DDK...
