could be forgetting to do the "make install" ?

I think the old README said you could just copy the bzImage to the /boot 
partition. with 2.6, I find it's really simple to compile the kernel 
properly with just this:
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
make install
lilo

You may not need the lilo line if you use grub.
