But still architecture dependent...

My Yamaha firmware updating adventure, mentioned previously, was with 
an Alpha - DOS boot disks tend not to work on Alpha.

Fuzzbucket: Try under wine, worked for me - though you could easily 
turn your drive into a brick though if it goes wrong and the drive 
doesnt have an emergency "just enough to speak ATAPI and update 
firmware" firmware ROM onboard.
