Hi,

Thanks to all who responded with helpful suggestions and useful web links 
yesterday. I now have networking operational on the UML. Part of the problem 
was that while tuntap was _supported_ in the kernel, it wasn't compiled in, 
which I had assumed was the case - my mistake.
