As anyone any experience of VMWare? I would appreciate any thoughts before
investing my weekend in converting my kids computer!

VMWare might be something to think about. It comes with the november issue of
Linux Format (DVD issue anyway).
I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I'll probably give it a bash over
the weekend.
