"-quickstart" switch is the one you're looking for. As Dave pointed out though, that just makes it sit around in memory pre-loaded so that the experience of start time appears more responsive to the end user. I clocked the process at 42MB RSS just now, before actually opening a document, with a blank doc it went up to 53MB.
So it might be nice in some circumstances, it won't help make a 64MB workstation go any faster. :-)
I used a PIII 400MHz system with 128MB ram for several years until very recently and ran RH8/9/JDS1/2 quite happily. Main apps were Mozilla (later FF/Thunderbird) and OOffice/SOffice with Gnome. And ssh. It really was pretty usable, the main drawback with low memory is that you have to allow OO or Mozilla to swap out to disk before switching. So you learn to work in bursts in each. Plus you can't afford to have any non-crucial things running.
What I could have done with 256MB or even 192!
