As you pointed out, in httpd.conf the setting was:
AddDefaultCharset utf-8
I changed it to:
AddDefaultCharset Off
This solves the problem I was having.
But as you say, converting the existing mysql data to utf-8 would be the
ideal solution.
I'll try to do this, if possible, and let you know the outcome.
