We use jabber here on RH 8 - It's very robust and is well supported by major
linux clients Gaim/ Kopete etc. I don't use many of the plugins or advanced
server features though.
I don't think we had to compile it though - it's running on a RH 8 box for the
last year or so with no issues whatsoever. Check to see if there is a
package available anywhere.
