[ILUG] Debian (Sarge) Root Password Problems

Got in using Ctrl+Alt+F1.
logged in as root.

vi /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

Changed Allowroot=true

Can't manage to save it.

as -- INSERT -- is showing.
When I "ZZ" it just types them,
if insert button is touched again
I get -- REPLACE --

I did some Googling how to save vi file
