Actually, what would be cute here is to do the following:

- compile everything with profiling enabled, specifically
   -fprofile-arcs

- every time after above when you recompile the distro, use the
   profile data collected previously for -fbranch-probabilities

I'm willing to bet a machine which did the above could potentially be 
an order of magnitude faster, and I'd really like to investigate this 
- if someone would send me a 4-way Opteron with at least 8GB of RAM 
to facilitate research into the above, i'd be very grateful.
