EU Open Source project to launch in Cork
Open Source software could provide a significant competitive
advantage to European industry, according to the principals of the
EU-funded CALIBRE project.
The EU-funded CALIBRE project will aim change the current
circumstance of the Open Source software (OSS) development model
by organising conferences and well as an "influential" European
Industrial Forum -- consisting of Europe's top companies -- who
will formulate policy in relation to Open Source. Part of the
project will also be to compile a database of Open Source success
stories as well as document and distribute best practices.

Linux supporters resist mutant penguins
Major players in the open source software sector have agreed to
support a single version of Linux, to strengthen the operating
system against Microsoft.
The Free Standards Group (FSG), a non-profit trade organisation
based in San Francisco, is expected to announce that the providers
of Linux versions have agreed to back Linux Standard Base 2.0. The
pact includes companies such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Intel
and other companies that are selling Linux-based computers,
software and services, such as Red Hat, Novell's SuSE, France's
MandrakeSoft and China's Sun Wah Linux.
