AFAIK, you have to set this yourself. Presumably, (according to man
iwconfig) you can set it to mode Auto, but i havn't had much mileage with
that myself. I don't have an access point though, just an ad-hoc network.
To get it working, I found i had to set the ESSID and 'mode ad-hoc', or I
got no joy.
