[ILUG] Setting limits in SuSE 9.1

[ILUG] Setting limits in SuSE 9.1

Niall O Broin niall at linux.ie
Mon Sep 20 16:54:37 IST 2004

My head is hurting trying to increase limits in SuSE 9.1. In /etc/pam.d/login
I have:

session  required       pam_limits.so

and in  /etc/security/limits.conf  I have:

*               soft    nproc   8192
*               hard    nproc   16384
*               soft    nofile  30000
*               hard    nofile  65536

which AIUI should be what's required. However, when I login soft limits are
still set to some lower values, which I can't change.

ls -lu seems to indicate that neither /etc/security/limits.conf nor /lib/
security/pam_limits.so are being read and lsof doesn't show /lib/security/
pam_limits.so to be opened by any process, although quite a few other /lib/
security/pam_XXXX.so files are.

Do any of you have an idea what I might be missing here ?

Niall
