What digital camera? My sister who is a complete newbie
plugged her olympus (usb storage) camera into FC3,
and it said "Would you like to view the photos" or something
else as obvious. Everything just worked...

What type is the winmodem? I've notes for smartlink (intel) here:
http://www.pixelbeat.org/systems/toshiba/slm-2.6/
Connexant is the problematic one (especially on kernel 2.6).
/sbin/lspci -tv should give enough info.

Type [Ctrl+R] in the bash prompt and you will get a
(reverse-i-search)`': TYPE THE SEARCH WORD HERE
This will show the matching commands executed before.
