Ok - don't look at me strangely, but try this:

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling

(on the smoothwall box)

There is a long explanation of why this may work, but I can't remember
offhand ;)

Something to do with routers handling window scaling wrongly, and it
only showing up in certain kernels.
