Have you thought of trying gnokii?
I don't know if it works with Motorola phones,
but it works quite well with my Sony-Ericsson T630
(so it works with some non-Nokia phones, at least).

What chip does the dongle have, as a matter of interest?
("hciconfig -a" will tell you under Linux/bluez.)
I think only CSR chips work "out of the box" under bluez.
