[ILUG] Ubuntu. streamtuner and xmms or music player or MPlayer

Hi,
Ok I'm on to Ubuntu. I like it, especially once I change most of that brown.
But I've gone and hit my head on a wall all day trying to set up
StreamTuner and xmms or music player.
The settings are probably all over the place now.
It started off that I just installed streamtuner. Only XMMS would
freez after starting to buffer.
So a little hunting and I found an alternative. MPlayer and of course
they have to be configured.
Now it still wont run. !!!!!!!

The system has sound.
can play a CD with Music Player. 

I dont mind which combination of apps I start using just want to get
something going.
Where do I start and what should it all look like?
What conf files and dependencies are involved?
Just to get something going.
