sounds to me like esd is running and xmms isn't using the esd output plugin.
can't tell you exactly where to change it, because i dont have xmms in front
of me here, but it sound be somewhere in the preferences. change from ALSA or
OSS to E Sound Deamon.
alternatively, you could just kill esd. $ kill `pgrep esd`
