IME sig11 is very commonly caused by a memory problem, and often will 
only be triggered by some application as in yours above. I've seen a 
couple of instances where a box was apparently operating fine but a 
kernel compile would always fail with a sig11.

Boot from anything resembling a recent decent distribution CD and you 
should have memtest86. Run that, making sure to change the 
configuration so you run all tests (by default it doesn't do some of 
the slowest, most thorough, tests) and leave it run overnight at least.
