Ah yes: That's possible with mailman lists, yes.

I have it set to off of course. It defaults to on for new subscribers 
typically (iirc) - however (iirc) it does not get set for existing 
subscribers if you upgrade pre-dupe-suppresing mailman to new 
mailman.

In the MUA would be more general, would work for any 
list/exploder/alias.
