Like with any executable on Linux, screensavers aren't required to have a
an extension.

Screensavers themselves are located in /usr/lib/xscreensaver:
kguest:~$ locate xjack
/usr/share/man/man6/xjack.6x.gz
/usr/share/xscreensaver/config/xjack.xml
/usr/lib/xscreensaver/xjack
kguest:~$ file /usr/lib/xscreensaver/xjack
/usr/lib/xscreensaver/xjack: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1
(SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
kguest:~$
All the screensavers on my laptop are compiled executables.
There's documentation available at http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/ which
should help :)
