[ILUG] Intel 537 modem

[ILUG] Intel 537 modem

Somebody on one of these lists (I really can't remember which, hence
the cross post - apologies to those members of both who end up getting
this twice) asked recently for a source of modems based on the Intel
537 chipset to use with Asterisk. I came across one today in Computer
City in Ballybrack for the princely sum of 9 EUR + VAT - it's sold as
"Mercury 56 kbps Fax Modem".

However, after buying it :-( I did a little further research and
discovered that this variant of the chip is NOT Asterisk compatible -
the native generic compatibility of the wcfxo driver is really only
with the MD3200 (Cirrus Logic/Ambient) chipset, which is found on the
537PG and 537PU versions and not on the 537EP, which is, of course,
what the Mercury modem uses.

So a word to the wise then - if you're looking for an Asterisk cheapie
card to play with, Intel 537 is NOT specific enough - you need 537PG or
537PU.
