I've been having this same problem of installing extensions for the
last couple of versions of firefox(1.0.4 and 1.0.6), but it's been
fairly low on my todo list. Yesterday I finally got around to tackling
it, and found this page which might help you:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic
In the author's own words:
"If your Firefox/Thunderbird/Mozilla Suite was working fine but isn't
anymore and no other application is exhibiting strange behaviour,
follow these steps."
For me, step 9 (deleting the chrome/ and extensions/ directories in my
profile) is what worked. I did have to reinstall my extensions
afterwards, but that's no big deal, plus sessionsaver still remembered
all my saved sessions.
I briefly tried digging around in the extensions/ dir to fix/remove
the specific offending part (to my untrained eye my Extensions.rdf
looked messed up), but all those markup files hurt my head, and nuking
the entire directory worked without major side effects anyway.
Definitely back up your entire ~/.mozilla/firefox directory before
doing any of the above. With all the firefox opening/closing and
profile switching one ends up doing it's easy for the wrong files to
get overwritten. I needed to recover files from this backup a couple
of times.
