Nah. We're all running GNU/Hurd with an L4 microkernel [1]. Monolithic
kernels are _so_ last century!
But seriously, I actually chose GNU/Linux over one of the Free *BSD
variants precisely because it *is* more mainstream and has a wider user
base with correspondingly more available software and more support for
different hardware. With more people using GNU/Linux, there's a greater
chance that they can help out other users with a similar mixture of
hardware and software.
Re. Hurd, I was reading an interview with one of the developers at
http://kerneltrap.org/node/5 and it does sound like a very interesting
project.
