If you are buying the laptop, then surely you should dictate the OS? I
mean - if his only reason for "needing" WinXP is, for example, to
support the latest games, then he should really buy his own machine for
that. Why does he need WinXP?

IIRC, NTFS compatibility was finished a few years back. you should not
have any problems reading the Windows partition from the Linux OS.
