| I must admit I have little idea what it is doing and haven't thought
| about it either. I'm a relative beginner having worked with Linux for
| only 11 months and that mainly on php and mysql.

fair enough.
the ILUG list / website is for help with Linux,
regardless of ones experience / knowledge.
may I make a suggestion?
“trim yer posts” — that is, when replying, remove
the bits (e.g., paragraphs) which are not relevant.
for instance, in yer reply, you quoted my entire
lengthy posting. that wasn't necessary, and some
people can get very irate about it. notice that,
in this reply, I have trimmed (removed) almost
everything, leaving just the parts I am replying
to (which I have further cut down). (I've also
indicated where trimming / editting happened.)
the Good Thing yer doing is interpolating yer
comments; that is, inserting yer reply after the
relevant parts of original post. (some people,
myself included, can get really irate about the
common alternative of “top posting”, where yer
entire occurs before the quoted (and usually
entire!) original. thanks!
just a suggestion.
cheers!
