The ILUG website , http://www.linux.ie, was discussed at the meeting.
Both myself and ILUG chairman Niall Walsh agree that it might as well be
declared 'dead' as nobody has written much for it in a very long time.
If we don't get new content for the site any time soon we may as well set it to redirect to google!
The website is the most permament and public resource that the ILUG has for
promoting, supporting and helping users of Linux in Ireland and for also
promoting the use of Linux itself in Ireland. It should be used for something
more constructive than hosting the archives of posts to the mailing lists.
There are some six hundred and thirty (630) subscriptions to the ILUG mailing
list, even with some people having subscribed from multiple email addresses it
is staggering to think that out of that many people no one can be bothered to
do any of the following:
* write a tutorial about using a favoured/much used tool/package
* write an entry for the Beginners Linux Guide or update what is already there
as some of it is woefully out of date
* write an install review of some flavour of Linux
* write a book review
* submit additional entries for the 'Alternatives to Windows Software' page.
The aim of this page is to provide people with information on equivalents to
what they can't do without on Windows and so learn they can do the same work
on Linux.
These are just five actions that any of us could do and I'm sure that's not
even scratching the surface of what could [and should] be done so we can
continue in fulfilling the aims and Objectives of the ILUG as drawn up in its
constitution:
2. Aims and Objectives.
The aims and objectives of the society shall be as follows:
1. To increase and promote awareness of the Linux operating
system within both the home and corporate sectors of the
Irish Computing industry.
2. To provide a forum to discuss and gain experience of the
Linux operating system.
3. To help educate people in the usage of Linux and related
software.
4. To promote Irish contributions to the kernel source code
development.
So what's it going to be?
