After you edit /etc/sysctl.conf you need to reread it by typing
# /sbin/sysctl -p
You can then check that the new value has taken effect by typing
# /sbin/sysctl -a | less
or specificaly for your case:
# /sbin/sysctl fs.file-max
Has the value updated, and are you then still seeing these errors?
