FWIW, the Apple "in-ear" headphones are vastly better than the standard
ones, and it remains a mystery to me why they maintain the standard
ones, as I agree with earlier posters that they are inferior.
I also noticed a marked improvement in the quality of the iPod's ADC
from the 3G to the Mini, Photo and Shuffle - I suspect that a part was
replaced somewhere along the line.
