The 'facts and figures' can often need a little favouring (salt).
Linux can be good for audio, depending on how comfortable you are with linux,
how fast your box is, and how much you tweak your kernel.
If you're very comfortable with Linux, you can patch your kernel for
low-latency, unless your box is super-fast. These are being worked on now for
the standard kernel, but it'll be a while before they're included.
If you just want to test the waters, there is a live-CD designed for audio
work that is pre-tweaked and has most of the best professional level audio
