Damn it, so it is. Apologies if previous post sounded high-and-mighty.
FWIW: I re-ran alsaconf a few times in my previous efforts to get the
sound working. Each and every time it muted all channels and I had to
un-mute them individually in alsamixer. That's why the headphone
channel was muted in the first place.
