Ok,

The FC3 box will pick up the doaminname from the DHCP server on your
network.  Even if it does not supply hostnames, it will still probably
supply the domain name as part of the DHCP spec.

I had the same 'problem' when I set up an IPCop box on my network to act
in the same role as your Netgear. Now I just give the boxes a hostname
and not a fqdn.

Funny, I don't remember FC2 doing this...
