you'll find that after installing gtk 2, gtk 1 is still on the system. this is
normal. do not try to remove gtk 1 unless you're certain there are no
programs depending on it. one annoying example is XMMS - why they can't
upgrade to gtk 2 is beyond me - after all, the XMMS fork Beep did it
alright...
