Haven't tried but you can use
iwlist eth1 scan
To list the AP's within range and see there signal strength, then either
iwconfig eth1 essid xxxxx
or
iwconfig eth1 ap xxxxxx
To associate with the AP
I see a green light flashing on my card when it's scanning. Once
associated with an AP you can use
ifconfig eth1 up
dhcpcd eth1 to configure the network, if there is a dhcp server.
