Which toolkits would you prefer? I ditched a Lesstif (Well, Motif..) app
today because the *Lock modifier is recognised (Alt+F and NumLock+Alt+F
are different things) - Pain in the ass when using menu accelerator
keys. I guess these modifiers are more significant on "traditional"
Unices, then?

You can have the GTK+ and Qt toolkits without Gnome and KDE but I don't
recommend losing the actual toolkits unless you're willing to severely
limit the GUI apps you use. You can't just edit a makefile to remove a
toolkit dependency - if an app's been written for GTK then you need GTK
(unless, of course, you're willing to rewrite it).

I think many GTK Linux apps will operate without Gnome but I've found
that a lot of Qt apps are tied in quite tightly with KDE - this isn't
always the case but it's common. In my opinion GTK is an essential
component if you're running X.
