xterm supports a few different serial apps (xterm is very modular
that way). Feel free to install other 'plugins'.
If you don't like xterm, there are quite a few other applications
compatible with xterm's "plugin architecture", eg gnome-terminal,
rxvt, which all support telnet, ssh, etc as xterm does. (However,
imho, none are as good as xterm).
