They wouldn't have had to learn how to land to do that - could have had 
"all" their training in dual seat trainers.

 From Wikipedia, that notoriously unreliable source:

To ensure that pilots could not baulk from suicide missions, some were 
bolted into their cockpits. Many were never taught how to land.
