They had taking off gear, which was jettisoned on take off and reused 
for some other poor schmuck. Not alone did they get multiple uses from 
the same gear, but I imagine taking off only gear could be rather 
lighter than landing gear, as the shocks involved are somewhat less.

P.S. This thread started off OT, and has now gone so far OT that it 
will surely manage to get back on topic sometime soon by lapping itself 
- or something.
