Thanks for your original help but I think it was just that my winmodem was outside the range of chipsets supported. No problems just no action. 

The error message from compiling 536ep is just a failure/stopping message. Tried to find an rpm. No luck. I think if I've seen google indications that changes in FC4 has fucked up a lot. I'll try it again and report back.
